DIY Faux Marble Lamp

DIY Faux Marble Lamp

I found a lamp that immediately reminded me of a $200 marble lamp on my wish list, except it was on sale for $18 and wasn’t marble.  No way this DIY could not happen, and maybe you’ve already guessed that this is going to be REALLY easy, like maybe doesn’t even classify as a DIY because it’s so easy but it totally is a DIY.  These are my favorite ones.

Materials:
Lamp
marble contact paper
-ruler
-pencil
-scissors

white lampThis lamp from Target is excellent and beautiful already, but sure, let’s make it marble.

contact paperI measured the height of the white portion of the lamp to be about 8.25″, then measured that I’d need about 14.25″ in length to wrap around the lamp and overlap.  I traced out these measurements on the back of the marble contact paper and cut it out.

applicationPeeling off a small portion of the backing, I lined up the paper as straight as possible before sticking it down, then smoothed over the paper with my fingers while peeling off the rest of the backing little by little.

I had to re-do this part a couple times, but the good thing is that this contact paper is pretty forgiving, meaning if you gently peel and re-stick, it won’t completely mess up the finish of the paper when you stick it on again.  For some of the stubborn air bubbles, I used a credit card to smooth them out.

That gold stem and acrylic detail- gorgeous bones, and if I get sick of the marble for some reason I can just peel off the contact paper later.  I’m a fan of that!

Threw in another styling of the lamp because I liked this too, and admittedly spent a lot of time playing around with decor on this one to find that I’m loving a minimal style even more these days.  I’ve been keeping that in mind as I work on some changes to our living room (!) meaning changing my mind about everything about a hundred times.  Nothing new there.

Are you into this marble makeover?  Do you prefer the lamp the way it was before?  I really love both!

Friday Finds

DWwatch

Happy Friday!  It’s been a lot of traveling, a lot of summer, and a lot of changes going on around here lately that have kept me away from the computer more than usual, and as much as I love my internets, it feels really good to get away for a bit.  Somehow this summer feels like the first time I’m fully appreciating being outside and taking in new sights.  That definitely isn’t true, but recently I’ve had no idea what day it is at any given time because of bad memory how much fun I’m having.  That’s the mark of an awesome summer, I say!

I just got back from seeing family in Chicago, and I’m pumped to roll out new projects.  I’ve been focusing on living room edits, including things I’ve had on my to-do list since moving into my place, so it’s terribly exciting, like screaming “FINALLY!” exciting.  Of course, I squeezed in time to browse around and gather favorite links for you guys to check out, but maybe your summer is going so amazingly that you’re not even online right now (though clearly you are- thanks for checking in and being here <3<3<3)  Have a beautiful weekend!

Photo above was my Chicago vacay indulgence.  The watch is from Daniel Wellington and I wear it every single day.  I love it forever.  Get 15% off your entire purchase until Aug. 30th with code “HOMEYOHMY”

Have you checked out We Make Collective yet??

Flatware I need. The photo on the site is not accurate so here’s a shot I took on Instagram.

I’d make this DIY ladder even if I didn’t need it.

Obsessed with the pop of blue in this bedroom.

I love this house.

Pretty way to decorate notebook covers.

What to know before buying your first home.

Please tell me you’re watching this season of True Detective and are crazy confused like I am.  Reading this was necessary.

Michaels Makers Summit Recap

Farmstead dinner

You might have caught glimpses on Instagram last weekend of the Michaels Makers Summit that I attended and wondered what was going on.  Let’s talk about it, ok?  There’s some really fun stuff here to share!

I’ll be taking part in monthly craft challenges along with 49 other bloggers as part of Michaels Makers.  Before starting the year, Michaels brought us all together in Sonoma for the Makers Summit where the amazing people from Creativebug taught us four different classes: image transfers, paper flowers, water colors, and weaving.  Bonus: all the classes are available for free online at Michaels.com until 8/22/15, so really guys, you MUST check them out.

image transfers classWe learned three different image transfer techniques from Courtney Cerruti, all of which *blew my mind* because I never knew these kinds of things were possible.  It may have been my favorite class from the summit for that reason alone.

image transfersClearly I was in an eyeball kind of mood for this class.

paper flowers classPaper flowers are a very meticulous craft, one that I found out I’m not very good at, ha!  I have so much admiration for Livia Cetti and how she has mastered such a challenging and beautiful art.

tissue paper flowerI may or may not have been the one that made this paper peony.  Yea it wasn’t me, but it’s gorgeous, isn’t it?

watercolorsThis was my first time using watercolors beyond lettering and it felt like a whole new world was opening up.  It was so inspiring to see Yao Cheng share techniques and insights on how to approach watercolors, and just to watch her paint effortlessly.

I’ve wanted to learn weaving for the longest time and was most excited about this class.  Annabel Wrigley made it SO easy to learn.

weaving

Still haven’t finished my weaving, but I’ll share it when it’s done!

Beyond the craft courses we took, the hospitality of our hosts, the thought put into every single detail, and being able to meet and hang out with other bloggers I love made it a seriously unforgettable weekend.

Truly one of the best experiences I’ve ever had, one that really reminded me of how we should never stop learning and trying new things, which is something I’ll be bumping to the top of the list for how to push through those slumps and inspiration blocks that come around.

So take those free classes, guys.  You can find them all by clicking here.  And if you’re interested in seeing who all the other Makers are, meet them here!

Around Town: Arts District in DTLA

I was romping around the Arts District wishing too late that I had brought my DSLR so that I could do an impromptu Around Town post, then it occurred to me that my iPhone 6 takes pretty good photos (my previous iPhone 4: hell no).  The challenge with documenting trips or photographing excursions is lugging around my camera, or remembering to bring it.  Not anymore (sometimes)!

I’m loving this idea of taking a casual approach here and there with this series by snapping shots with my phone for those spontaneous outings, because I feel like there’s a lot I don’t end up sharing due to photography restraints.  If you follow me on Instagram, you’ve probably noticed that exploring LA (or anywhere, really) is something I seriously love to do, and I want to bring more of that here to the blog since it’s a lot of where I find inspiration.  Hopefully you guys like this and at least find it interesting, or helpful for whenever you come to visit!

So the Arts District.  We came here for lunch and stuck around after to browse the shops, which are all pretty unique and different from your average shopping.  It’s a small area with cool places to hang out, good eats, and lots of street art to be confused by.

Some favorite spots:

Cafe Gratitude

Cafe-Gratitude

The sister restaurant to Gracias Madre, and just like that joint, has gorgeous decor to match the best vegan food I’ve tried.  I’m not vegan, but I could be if I got to eat this (or Gracias Madre) everyday.  I like getting the Macrobiotic Bowl and a matcha green tea latte.

Cafe GratitudeAnd I’ll take those bentwood armchairs.

Poketo

Poketo

Lots of cute stuff here ranging in decor, stationary, fashion, beauty, etc.  I think of it as the place I’d go to for buying a unique gift for someone.  Or for myself.

Alchemy Works

I most loved the art on the walls, but there are a lot of cool knick knacks to touch in here, plus there’s a Warby Parker in the back corner if you’re curious about trying their frames.

Apolis

Mostly accessories and menswear, and it’s a beautiful store that I like to browse.  They’re best known for their market totes, which I still want to get!

82 Bar in DTLA

It’s a classic arcade bar, and I’ve never not had a good time here, though if you arrive after 9PM you will end up standing in line forever.  I recently received a tip to go in the late afternoon to avoid big crowds. Wanted to try that this time but they weren’t open, darn.

More places to eat and drink:
The Springs– Shared a shot of that here and here.  Gorgeous space with juice bar, pop-up shops, and vegan food (I sound like all I eat is vegan).
Wurstkuche– Not vegan. Best wursts I’ve had, and possibly best fries I’ve had??  Might be the sauce.  Great craft beers, too.
Angel City Brewery– Short brewery tour and large event space with games to play.  They have corn holes!
Groundwork Coffee
Blacktop Coffee

Next up is Chicago! I’m leaving this weekend for my annual trip to see some family, which I’m always excited for. Heading out early for the week, so wishing you all a most excellent weekend. Let me know how you guys like these kind of posts!  They won’t be too often, but hopefully not as sparse as before. Either way, tell me if you dig it or not. <3

07/27 DIY

DIY Suede Leather Tassels

Suede leather tassels DIYThis one might be even easier than expected, guys.  Usually an idea comes to me before I source materials, but a lot of times it can happen the other way around.  I found these pre-cut suede leather fringe pieces for making tassels, so tassels I was going to make.  The only thing I had to come up with was adding on some gold braided leather cord and bam, we’ve got a two-second DIY accessory (time estimation may be exaggerated).

My buddies at PBteen sent me this tote bag to style for the back-to-school season, and these tassels ended up being perfect for it.  They can be tied around any kind of strap, or they could be tied to a snap clip if tying them around isn’t an option for a different type of bag.  For the full tutorial, hop on over to the PBteen blog!

DIY Tassel Accesssory

Do you/did you sport a back pack or a tote bag in school?  I was a tote bag kind of girl, and I definitely didn’t carry around flowers like this, but we can pretend, ha!

If you passed the link, find the tutorial here at the PBteen blog.

Long Meadow RanchSorry it’s been a little quiet around here this week!  I’ve been prepping to leave for the Michaels Makers Summit (I’m there right now!) in Sonoma, CA which is where I shot this photo.  It’s from yesterday, where we made flower crowns, ate bomb food, and drank a bunch of wine, all of which is probably how most of this weekend is going to play out- heck yes!  I’ll be working on getting a recap of that on here later I think, but until then, I’ll be sharing what I can on Instagram and Snapchat @homeyohmy (the learning curve is steep on this one).

Just dropping in to share some favorite links for you guys to enjoy and to wish you all the best weekend!  See you here on Monday for a quick and easy back-to-school DIY!
