08/27 Inspiring Spaces

Black and White Living Rooms

Maybe you already knew, but the inspiration driving my living room makeover is black and white.  Surprise surprise!   I’ve been taking a lot of cues from Scandinavian and minimal designs because I’m simply most drawn to those, and though I’ve fantasized about having a wonderfully eclectic colorful home, my first love has always been a chic, neutral space.

The big decision right now is on a sofa, and the frontrunner is a white (maybe gray) one.  Wait wait wait, what happened to the blue velvet sofa obsession??  I know!  With the way things have been coming along, throwing in a dramatic blue velvet sofa would look SWEET, but a more neutral option is tugging at me even more.  Overall though, I’m struggling the most with this decision.  We might need to have a vote on the blog soon.

Still have a few more tough decisions to make, but something I like to do to help guide me is to keep inspiration photos on a private Pinterest board, and when I come across decor I’m contemplating, I ask myself if it would fit into these spaces.  I do believe in if you like it, you like it, but I also think guidelines need to be in place to keep on track, especially for someone like me who can get carried away with liking a lot of different things.

Current inspiration:

beni_ourain_1Coffee table and Beni Ourain rug of my dreams.  Both with price tags that hurt, ha!  I did get a moroccan shag rug I LOVE though and shared a peek on Instagram.

Liking any of these spaces?  Do you keep style-themed pinboards to help guide your decor decisions, too?

DIY Gold Pattern Desk Organizers

DIY gold pattern desk organizers

Once upon a time, almost every DIY I did involved gold spray paint.  Let’s have a little throwback today, shall we?  For back-to-school with PBteen, I took inspiration from an old favorite DIY of mine and did a little bit of an updated version with different designs.  Just a good and simple repurpose of jars, dishes, or bowls (I found mine at Crate and Barrel) to make desk organization pretty.  Find the tutorial at the PBteen blog!

It’s been a while since I’ve been in school, and at first I missed the back-to-school shopping but then realized… any day can be back-to-school shopping now, ha.  Who else is always looking for a pretty addition for their desk or work space?

Friday Finds

This week behind the scenes was all about making changes to the home, a lot of which was decluttering, which I’m still not done with, duh. Still a few more big decisions to make and maybe I’ll be done with this while we still remember that I’m working on it, ha!

Excited for this weekend because it’s the first free weekend we’ve had in a while. Summer is going stupid fast so I’m most looking forward to doing nothing for a bit. It’s the greatest luxury I can think of these days- can’t get enough of it, you know??

Hope you guys have a relaxing weekend ahead and enjoy this week’s favorite links!:

Another gorgeous black and white home.

My most worn sandals of this summer because I love.

The best IKEA Rast hack ever.

Possibly my favorite fruit-themed project ever.

I really, really want this macrame wall hanging.

Boyfriend laughed so hard from this that he cried. It’s funny, but is it THAT funny?

DIY Plywood daybed? Wow.

Have we talked about this incredible home before and after yet? I collapsed at the bathroom.

08/19 Shop

Shop: Marble Goods Under $60

marble goodsI was taking stock on “props” I have for photo styling and noticed I have a lot of marble stuff.  I really, really like marble, particularly the look of carrara, so let’s do some browsing for affordable ways to bring more marble into our lives, shall we?  Of course, not everything here is real marble, but some of it is!

1. Ok, why is this shelf not in my life?  AND it comes with the gold brackets?  This needs to happen.
2. My current iPhone case and I love it.
3. I like that these coasters are on the thicker side.
4. This box is one of my favorite decor pieces. You might have spotted it before here.
5. The prettiest notebook.  So pretty that I haven’t written in mine yet and kind of don’t want to ever, but I will…
6. A cup that I like to use for tea.
7. This small cutting board is on its way to me!
8. What I like even more about this laptop case is the way it feels.  Buttery smooth.
9. I cheated with this gorgeous paper towel holder because it’s $3 over, but that’s ok.

I’ve had marble on my mind a lot more lately since making over this lamp and hope to DIY with it more.  Would you want to see that?  Are you into marble as well?

DIY Modern Yarn Hanging

DIY- Modern Wall Hanging

Didn’t you know I love wall hangings?  Really wasn’t intending on doing many of these, but the inspiration kept coming.  I see a lot of these types of hangings in stores all over LA, and strangely when I bumped into these gold rings at the craft store, they made me think of the rings I’m wearing on my index finger in this photo, which is what inspired the design for this hanging.  Weird, right?  I like it when inspiration strikes in unexpected ways, mmhmm.

Materials:
-yarn
scissors
-gold rings in 1.5″ and 3″
Krazy glue
-cardboard (about 14″ in length)
-round wood dowel (cut mine to about 7.25″)

string ringI cut a piece of yarn and folded it in half, then put it through the 1.5″ gold ring.

loopTaking the loose ends of the string, I pulled them through the yarn loop and then pulled down, but not all the way.  I kept it loose like shown in the above right photo.  *This is called a lark’s head knot and will be done a bajillion more times for this DIY*

tied dowelI double knotted the loose ends of the yarn to each end of a wood dowel, then reinforced the knots with a dab of Krazy glue before cutting off the excess yarn.  Weird note- I find watching the glue seep into the knot very satisfying and consider it one of my too-specific favorite craft things.

second loopWith another half-folded piece of yarn, this time knotted at the other end, I tied a lark’s head knot around the 3″ ring., pulling it tight.

connecting ringsI pulled this yarn through the loop of the first lark’s head knot that I left open/loose and tied a Lark’s head knot around THAT.  Larkception (do people still make that joke?).  After pulling that tight, I reinforced the knot with Krazy glue before cutting off the excess yarn.  Then, I pulled the first lark’s head knot tight to secure everything onto the gold ring.

top piece

^Progress report.

yarnI hacksawed a piece of cardboard about 14″ in length from a box and used it to wrap the yarn around it 10 times.  Cutting down one end if the yarn yields this bundle of of half folded yarn.  Guess what I did with it?

yarn hangingsYup, giant lark’s head knot around the the dowel.  I made six of these across the dowel, pulling each one as tightly as possible.

cut

Final step was to give it a hair cut.

DIY yarn hanging-3

Modern yarn hanging DIY-2

DIY Modern yarn hangingsI ended up making two because I couldn’t decide which color yarn to get, so I got both.  I went with the charcoal gray first thinking I’d love it more, but I’m not as impressed with the color as I am with the linen-colored yarn.  It looks much more multi-dimensional than I thought it would, which is what I expected would be the case with the charcoal color, but linen wins this one by far.

What do you think?  What color(s) would you make this in?
