DIY Painted Bottles

DIY Painted bottlesIn light of Earth Month, my friends at PBteen prompted me to come up with a recycling DIY, and a painted vase project is always a good idea to me!  This was actually one of the first ideas I ever shared on this blog (which I won’t link to because it’s so embarrassing now and makes me cringe really, really hard and I totally think you shouldn’t try looking for it ever) and thought it would be cool to do an updated, colorful version of it that’s still just as simple and easy.

See the full tutorial here at the PBteen blog!

DIY Spray painted bottlesNote.  I used Montana Gold spray paints in Bazooka Joe, Malachite, and Liberty and they seriously are some of the best quality spray paints out there.  Super fast drying and excellent color pay off, except the gold chrome color was extremely disappointing.  It was more of a brassy bronze and I didn’t like it at all, so I stuck with my favorite metallic gold spray paint from Rust-Oleum, which is the one you’re seeing here.

Striped vase DIY

Painted bottlesFlowers are protea, lilac, and freesia, which you might’ve seen me share on Instagram last week.  I’m planning to embrace colors more especially for spring and summer, and flowers are always my go-to for that.  The best low commitment option for color experimenting ;).

If you passed the link for the tutorial, see it here at the PBteen Blog.

    1. Marlene… I would never make it that easy HAHA. The answer is no, never. You’re right though, as hard as I cringe, they’re pretty funny too!

  1. Hi Amy – did you use Starbucks drinks bottles? I have a bunch of them but I can’t figure how to get the sticky adhesive off of them. Any ideas? thx!

    1. I did not use Starbucks bottles, and unfortunately don’t have experience with taking off those labels. Are you saying the label peeled off but the sticky residue is still there? To remove sticky gunk, I use Goo Gone– works really well if you let it soak in!

  2. These are adorable!! Definitely on my to-do list :) Quick question, where did you get the mini milk bottles? The ones that look like the Starbucks bottles, though I know you didn’t use Starbucks ones. Thanks!

    1. Hi Paige! I got them from Michaels. They’re sold in a six pack or individually, although I think the individually ones have something written on them.

  3. Hi Amy,

I love that aqua color you painted with and want to do something similar to this DIY for a party im hosting…when I looked up the malachite swatch of the spray paint that you specified, it looks more green, is this indeed an aqua-ish color? It looks beautiful in the photos! You are so creative!

    1. Hi Harini! Yes, it’s an aqua color. I think Malachite comes in a light and dark color, but the one I use is just the regular one. To give you another view of what the color is like, I also used it in this post.

  4. LOVE these! How cute. The stripes are darling and love those gorgeous flowers. I’m off to check out more. Your blog is adorable!

  5. Hi Amy! These are super cute <3 Quick question, though. Could these be used as drinking bottles? Basically, is the paint that you used, or is there any paint that you could use, that would be OK to wash on a regular basis? Thanks a bunch!!

    1. Hi Heather! I’ve found that water tends to mess with the finish of spray paints and I wouldn’t recommend using spray paint on any surface that needs to be regularly washed. Instead, you can try glass paints or dishwasher safe acrylic paint (the Martha Stewart line I believe is dishwasher safe).
