DIY Gold Mouse Pad

DIY Gold Mouse Pad | Homey Oh My!Another addition to my work space!  Thus, it had to be gold.  Back story… there was an attempt before this one to make my mouse pad cuter and I ended up ruining it :(.  So this is attempt #2 and it turned out WAY better than my original plan.  Isn’t it great how things work out that way?

Here’s how it goes.

How to paint a mouse pad | Homey Oh My!I taped my design on the black mouse pad with 1/4 inch vinyl tape, then spray painted the mouse pad with one heavy coat of Rust-Oleum Gold Spray Paint.  After removing the tape, I let the mouse pad dry for a couple hours before dabbing on a layer of Mod Podge with a foam pouncer.  It dries clear, I promise!  This is to protect the spray painted design from potentially rubbing off, though I did try scraping at it and it’s on there pretty good.

DIY old mouse pad | Homey Oh My!That’s it!  Pretty simple, but makes a huge statement, and definitely much better than keeping the mouse pad plain like it was before, don’t cha think?

DIY gold mouse pad | Homey Oh My!My favorite mouse pad EVER, and I couldn’t be happier with it.  This is actually pretty similar to my gold leaf jewelry tray, which you might want to check out if you haven’t already!

  1. Amy I LOVE this! I spray painted my black mousepad gold back when I did made my gold rail storage {and um pretty much spray painted everything in sight, haha} but did turquoise polka dots on top. I love the design on yours sooooooo much better! that photo is awesome too!

  2. That’s so pretty! I love the design too and the perfect straight lines! Great job! Black and gold is always a good idea ;)

  3. Love this! Your ability to create a perfect looking geometric pattern never fails to amaze me. I’d never think to spraypaint a mousepad, but now I’m thinking my office is in dire need of Rustoleum metallic gold. Thanks for sharing, Amy :)

  4. Hey Amy, I LOVE this mousepad! As I had mentioned before I recently created a gold and turquoise mousepad for my office, but it’s looking like I’m gonna have to go to attempt 2 as well. Did you use any kind of sealer on yours? I didn’t and also used gold spray paint, but it’s rubbed off over time {it’s probably been about a month} and now I’m gonna have to re-do it, booooooo.

  6. What a fun idea, and I love the gold geometric pattern! I have some old mousepads that could use a bit of cleaning up, thanks for the inspiration! I featured this on my blog today, and I’m stopping by to pin it; thanks so much for sharing at Creativity Unleashed!

  8. Metallics make everything better, right? This is a gorgeous idea. I do have a question though, you have an awesome background on your comp screen. I’m a florist and would adore a link to this if possible. Thanks in advance.

  9. Love this & am thinking of making one for my office. Have a quick question, did you let the paint dry before removing the tape at all?

    1. Hi Jennifer! I didn’t let the paint dry at all and removed the tape immediately. I don’t think you’ll have any problems if you let the paint dry first but it’s not necessary. Let me know how it goes!

  10. Hellooo!
Sooo I tried this and although it came out great- the color was dull looking after I applied the mod podge. Is it because I used a foam brush instead of a foam pouncer? Should I do it over or is that how it’s suppose to look? Thanks! Any feedback would be appreciated.

    1. Hi Susan! Hm, I didn’t experience any dulling with mine. It could be the brushing that disturbed the finish of the spray paint, but I don’t know that for sure. Other things to consider are what type of Mod Podge you are using, or if the spray paint was fully dried before the Mod Podge application. I’ve also found sometimes that different types of spray paints react differently with certain top coats, which I don’t figure out until it’s too late :P Something I would maybe try is using a clear acrylic spray instead of Mod Podge to seal it in. I’ve never tried this on a mouse pad, but it could work!
